You made the right choice. The Epiphone E1 is a legend, but only if you treat it right. Most beginners return this guitar because they think it “hurts” to play. It’s not the guitar; it’s the setup.
Here are the 5 steps to turning your budget axe into a shred machine:
Factory strings are stiff and often rusty from warehouse storage.
If the strings are too high off the fretboard, you have to press too hard.
Does your G-string go out of tune when you bend it? It’s catching in the nut (the white plastic piece near the headstock).
Epiphone fretboards often arrive looking dry and pale.
Play an open E string. Now play the E string at the 12th fret (the double dots). If the 12th fret sounds “sharp” (higher pitch), your saddle needs to move back. This ensures you sound good up and down the neck.
Now that your guitar plays like a dream, what are you going to play?
A perfectly set-up guitar is useless if you don’t have a plan. I see too many people spend hours fixing their gear and 0 minutes learning a song.
My 40-Year Recommendation: For the first 30 days, ignore the boring theory books. Use Simply Guitar to get your “Quick Wins.” It listens to you play and guides you through your first real songs.
