Your Epiphone E1 Rockstar Setup Guide

You made the right choice. The Epiphone E1 is a legend, but only if you treat it right. Most beginners return this guitar because they think it “hurts” to play. It’s not the guitar; it’s the setup.

Here are the 5 steps to turning your budget axe into a shred machine:

1. The “Slinky” Upgrade (Do this first!)

Factory strings are stiff and often rusty from warehouse storage.

2. Lower the “Action” (The Bridge)

If the strings are too high off the fretboard, you have to press too hard.

  • The Fix: Locate the two thumbwheels on the bridge (where the strings end).
  • The Move: Turn them clockwise to lower the bridge. Go as low as you can until the strings start to “buzz” when you play. Then back it off a tiny bit.

3. The “Pencil” Trick (Tuning Stability)

Does your G-string go out of tune when you bend it? It’s catching in the nut (the white plastic piece near the headstock).

  • The Fix: Take a standard graphite pencil. Loosen the string, lift it out of the slot, and “color” inside the slot with the pencil.
  • The Result: The graphite acts as a lubricant. Your strings will slide through smoothly and stay in tune.

4. Hydrate the Fretboard

Epiphone fretboards often arrive looking dry and pale.

  • The Fix: When the strings are off, rub a tiny drop of Lemon Oil or Fretboard Conditioner into the wood.
  • The Result: It looks darker, richer, and feels faster under your fingers.

5. The Intonation Check

Play an open E string. Now play the E string at the 12th fret (the double dots). If the 12th fret sounds “sharp” (higher pitch), your saddle needs to move back. This ensures you sound good up and down the neck.

🛑 STOP! Don’t Waste a Good Setup…

Now that your guitar plays like a dream, what are you going to play?

A perfectly set-up guitar is useless if you don’t have a plan. I see too many people spend hours fixing their gear and 0 minutes learning a song.

My 40-Year Recommendation: For the first 30 days, ignore the boring theory books. Use Simply Guitar to get your “Quick Wins.” It listens to you play and guides you through your first real songs.
